اعتدنا تقطيع التاريخ شرائحَ سمّيناها "عصوراً" و"حِقباً" و"مراحلَ"، إلخ...
وهذا التقطيع جزّأ التاريخ ورسم حدوداً زمنيّة تناقلَتْها الكتب واعتمدها التعليم فرسخت في الأذهان، حواجزَ بين أزمنةٍ هي في الواقع التاريخيّ متواصلةٌ؛ متداخلة.
هكذا، اعتدنا حشرَ الظواهر الإجتماعيّة والسياسيّة والثقافيّة في مقاطع زمنيّة ضيّقة كتلك التي تطابق عُمر الدّول، مثلاً، هذا في حين أن هذه الظواهر لها إمتداداتها، قبلاً وبعدُ، فلا تُفهم ولا تفسّر إلا في مدّى زمنيّ أطول.
هذا الكتاب الذي وضعه أحد أشهر المؤرّخين وأبرزهم تجديداً لمعرفة ما يسمى "العصر الوسيط: يعرض، بإختصار ووضوح، دواعي التحفّظ العلمي على التحقيب التقليدي للتاريخ، مقدّماً، في ذلك، مثال "العصر الوسيط" الذي يراه أطول ممّا يُقال عنه ومثال "عصر النهضة" الذي يحذّر من "جِدته المزعومة".
في هذا الكتاب الصغير الحجم ما يحفز القارئ العربي على التفكّر في تحقيب تاريخه، كما رسخ في الأذهان وفي الكتب السائدة، ويدعو إلى إعادة النظر في هذا التحقيب.
