كيف نظر جاك لوغوف إلى التاريخ؟ أو بالأحرى كيف ارتأت مدرسة "الحوليات" الفرنسية التي ينتمي إليها أن تدرس التاريخ؟ في معجم التاريخ الجديد (1978) الذي أشرف لوغوف على نشره، نلاحظ أن مادة التاريخ لم تعد مسلطة على المعارك ومآثر الملوك والأمراء والرؤساء، بل توسعت لتشمل الأنثروبولوجيا التاريخية وعملي الإجتماع والنفس والإثنولوجيا والثقافة المادية والمتخيّل الشعبي والمهمّشين.
وراح المؤرخون الجدد يدرسون تاريخ الذهنيات والبنى الإجتماعية؛ ووظفوا في سبيل ذلك جميع علوم العصر، ولا سيما العلوم الإنسانية، فأفاد التاريخ الجديد من علم الإحصاء السكاني والعاديات والإقتصاد و"الأنثروبولوجيا الدينية والمناهج الحديثة في تاريخ الأدب والفن والعلوم والسياسية، وانصبّ اختيار القضايا الجديدة على المناخ واللاوعي والأسطورة والذهنيات واللغة والكتّاب الشباب والجسد والمطبخ والرأي العام والفيلم والعيد".
وإذا بالتاريخ الجديد يستقي من العلم منهجه وصرامته وتوثيقه، وإذا به ينفتح على المدوّن وغير المدوّن، ذلك أن كتابة التاريخ تتجاوز الكتابة والتدوين، وتنقل جميع النشاطات البشرية.
