"ولم يكن التدخين المبكر من عادة معين السفرجل، إلا أنه وجد أن السيجارة المشتعلة قد تخفف شيئاً من اللاضطراب الذي ابتدأ مع ارتمائه على مقعده المفضل أمام باب الشرفة المطل على الشارع، وقد ظهرت له العمارات المقابلة يرفرف على واجهاتها الغسيل كأنه قطع ملونة أشبه بالأعلام التي قد تكون رفعت من أجل احتفال ما. وكان يستعيد من جديد تلك الدقائق المشوشة التي مرت عليه دون إنذار كما الأحلام التي يراها كثيراً في نومه. إلا أن حياة الشارع اليومية في حركة الناس والسيارات ونداء الباعة وبريق الشمس التي تتمدد ببطء في مساحة الفضاء، كانت قد بدأت، فخرج إلى الشرفة يستطلع فضاء المدينة الذي قد يخفف عنه وطأة التشوش الذي طغى عليه مع بداية يوم آخر كهذا، فكان لبريق الضوء أثر عليه".
