لأنه ليس أقدر من المرأة في الكلام عن بنات جنسها، سواء كانت كاتبة أم مكتوبة، ذاتاً أم موضوعاً، لا بد أن يأتي النتاج المترتب على مثل هذه العلاقة على قدر كبير من الصدق والرقي في التعبير؛ ونحسب أن الدكتورة نجلاء حمادة قد وعَت مهمة البحث عن نسائها بحسّ عميق ومسؤولية كبيرة؛ فتعمدت في هذا العمل إغفال الرائدات من النساء، فلكي تكون الصورة التي يعكسها الكتاب ممثلة لأكبر عدد من نساء المجتمع، اختارت حمادة الكتابة عن نساء عاديّات، من موزاييك من الثقافة والطبقات الاجتماعية المختلفة ومن بيئات تتراوح بين الأرستقراطي والبرجوازي والفقير (أي بين الكافيار إلى العدس)، وبين المديني والقروي والبدوي، من مناطق متعددة من لبنان وجواره. فالرائدات والمرموقات كُتب ويكتب عنهن الكثير، وهن نماذج قلّما تتكرّر.
أما من كتبت عن حيواتهن حمادة في هذا العمل الرائد؛ فيمثلن نماذج لمعظم فئات المجتمع. فقد اختارت بحسّ الباحثة عن الحقيقة المفقودة إقحام حيوات النساء ولغتهن، كما هما، على الحيز العام بدلاً من اقتطاع موقع لبعضهن في الحيّز الذكوري العام وفي اللغة الذكورية الأكثر تداولاً. فالخيار الأخير يبقي السواد الأعظم من النساء خارج المعرفة ويبقي لغتهن على هامش ما يعتبر جديراً بالتداول.
وهكذا انبثق هذا العمل من رحم النساء في سعي لنقل صور حيواتهن كما هي، عبر مقاربة اختارتها الكاتبة ترتكز على سير نساء، لبنانيات أو يقمن في لبنان، بواسطة مقابلات شخصية لصاحبات السير، تعبر عن نظرة كل واحدة من صاحبات السير لذاتها وإلى موقعها من الأسرة والمجتمع والعالم.
وبعد، أياً كانت الصورة التي تمثلها المرأة في "عدس وكافيار"، فإن الأمر يتوقف أولاً وأخيراً على ثقافتها وثقافة الوسط الذي تعيش فيه، ففي هذا الكتاب نقع على صور نساء لا يختلفن كثيراً عن تلك التي عرفناها مع قاسم أمين في بداية القرن العشرين، في مقابل صور نساء يتجاوزن الدور التقليدي إلى آخر أكثر وعياً بأدوارهن وقيمتهن في الحياة، ولكن أي الصورتين هي الأصدق تعبيراً عن النساء في مجتمعاتنا، والجواب يأتي في هذه السير الغنيّة والحيّة التي تختصر تاريخ النساء في هذا الوطن.
