في هذا الكتاب يتناول الشاعر والباحث اليمني علي المقري مسألة الخمر والنبيذ في الإسلام، من خلال النصوص القرآنية والمصادر والمراجع التاريخية. ويعرض لاختلاف الفقهاء والباحثين في مسألة تحريم الخمر. ويبين أنه لا يوجد أي حد أو عقوبة في القرآن والسنة على شارب الخمر، واتفاق المراجع الإسلامية أن النبيذ حلال.
الكتاب يبدأ بتعريف الخمر والنبيذ، مروراً بمكانة الخمر قبل الإسلام وصولاً إلى تناول الخمر والمجون في العصرين الأموي والعباسي.
واللافت أن المؤلف يرى في الدين جوهره، إعمال العقل والفكر والعلم، وهو بذلك أقرب إلى الدين من حراسه المزعومين حيث لا تكاد تخلو سورة في القرآن من الدعوة إلى التعقل والتعلم والتفكر الخ.
