جاك لندن بالإنجليزية (Jack London)، واحد من ألمع الأسماء التي ظهرت في سماء الأدب الأمريكي ولد عام 1876 في سان فرنسيسكو،ا بنا غير شرعيا لأب يعمل عرافا متجولا وأم تمارس الروحانيات. ، ولهذا يُعَرَّف جاك لندن في الأدبيات الاشتراكية والماركسية بأنه يتحدر من الشريحة البرجوازية الصغيرة، يعمل في خدمة الكادحين.
تنقل في يفاعته بين عدد من الأعمال الصغيرة للحصول على قوته،بائع صحف،حمالا أو عاملا على عربات الثلج،ثم في تفريغ وتحميل المراكب،إلى أن تعلق بحب البحر فاتجه للعمل على السفن.
في عام 1894 قبض عليه خلال تجواله في منطقة شلالات نياغارا،واقتيد إلى السجن بتهمة التشرد ليقض فيه،دونما أية محاكمة،ثلاثين يوما،وقد تعرف في السجن على الطبقات العاملة المسحوقة وما تعاني منه جراء استغلال أرباب العمل لها،فالتحق فور خروجه من السجن بفرع الحزب الاشتراكي في أوكلاند،وانكب على القراءة والكتابة دون كلل،وأخذ طموحه يشتد لتحقيق ما أصبح حلمه في أن يصبح كاتبا كبيرا،وكان يرى أنه كي يحقق هذا الهدف ينبغي أن تكون له فلسفته الواضحة وأفكاره المميزة.
نشرت أولى قصصه عام 1899 في مجلة"أفرلاند مونثلي"أما أول رواية ظهرت فكانت "ابنة الثلوج"عام 1902.
في عام 1904 باشر كتابته لـ"ذئب البحار" وكان آنئذ يعمل مراسلا صحفيا،فكلف بالسفر إلى اليابان لتغطية أخبار الحرب اليابنية الروسية،وصدرت الرواية في العام نفسه لتحقق نجاحا منقطع النظير.
كانت حياته على قصرها-40عاما-شديدة الغنى والتنوع،وقد كتب في خلال الأعوام الستة عشر الأخيرة منها،تسع عشرة رواية،وثماني عشرة مجموعة قصصية،وثلاث مسرحيات،وأكثر من 150 مقالة وثمانية كتب عن المجتمع وفي السيرة الذاتية.
ومات منتحرا عام 1916.
