كتاب "الأعلام" للعلامة المؤرخ خير الدين الزركلي لا يستغني عنه باحث لما حوى من التراجم على اختلاف بلدان المترجمين وجنسهم ومذاهبهم ونحلهم، طبع في عصر مؤلفه ثلاث طبعات، والطبعة الرابعة بعد وفاته في سنة 1979م. وعن هذه الطبعة صوِّر مراراً. ونشط بعض الباحثين، فجعلوا لهذا الكتاب ذيولاً متممين بها عمل الزركلي، ومن هذه الذيول "ذيل الأعلام" للأستاذ أحمد العلاونة الذي طبع سنة 1418هـ في دار المنارة بجدة في مجلد ألحق به تصحيحات له على صاحب "الأعلام" كما ألحق به مقالتين الأولى لمحمد أحمد دهمان، والثانية للشيخ إسماعيل الأكوع. وهما نقد للطبعة الثانية من كتاب "الأعلام".
وهذا العمل يأتي ضمن هذا الإطار حيث عمد محمد بن عبد الله آل رشيد إلى إجراء قراءة نقدية لذيل الأعلام للعلاونة. حيث كان قد وجه له (للعلاونة) سابقاً وضمن مقالتين نشرهما في إحدى الجرائد نقداً لكتابه "ذيل الأعلام"، فرأى إعادة النظر وفي كتابه هذا لهاتين المقالتين مضيفاً إليهما ما تبين له من خطأ وقع فيه العلاونة ولم ينشر، ثم ناقداً ومصححاً ما ورد في الجزء الثاني من كتابه "ذيل الأعلام"، وكذلك ما ألحقه في الجزء الأول والثاني من استدراكاته على الزركلي، ولم يحالفه الصواب في تلك الاستدراكات، ملحقاً في كتابه هذا أربعة ملاحق هي: الملحق الأول، في الردّ على زهير الشاويش صاحب المكتب الإسلامي. والملحق الثاني، في الردّ على الدكتور محمد بن لطفي الصباغ محقق "رسالة أبي داود إلى أهل مكة". والملحق الثالث، مقال العلامة محمد الطناحي في نقده للجزء الأول من ذيل الأعلام تحت عنوان "ذيل الأعلام ومغالبة الهوى" مبيناً ما اقتبسه العلاونة من مقال الطناحي وما استفاده منه من غير إشارة إلى ذلك. الملحق الرابع، ويحتوي على الوثائق التي سبق تنبيهه عليها في ثنايا هذا الكتاب.
