يرمي هذا الكتاب كما أراد له مؤلفه "صاحب أبو جناح" إلى استقراء جملة من الظواهر اللغوية الموثقة بالنقل الصحيح، ويسعى إلى تصنيفها، ثم دراستها وتحليلها بهدف تفسيرها.
إتجهت عناية المؤلف، بصورة خاصة، إلى ما نقل عن الحجازيين من أهل مكة والمدينة، وفيهم صحابة وتابعون أجلاء، وكذلك من جاورهم من العرب ممن نقلت عنهم قراءات تمثلت فيها استخدامات لغوية معينة، دخلت طائفة غير يسيرة منها فيما اصطلح عليه المصنفون القراءات الشاذة. وبعض هذه القراءات على ما يرى المؤلف يخالف المألوف الشائع مما تواضع عليه أهل النحو واللغة، وعرف فيما بعد بالعربية الفصيحة.
من هنا جاء هذا الكتاب ليستعرض أهم الظواهر اللغوية التي تلفت النظر في قراءة أهل الحجاز وتشخص أمام المتتبع بصفتها خصائص تميّز هؤلاء القراء عن سواهم من جمهور القارئين، وبناءً على ذلك وزع المؤلف بحثه عن الظاهر اللغوية إلى عناوين مختلفة نذكر منها: مقدمة في علم القراءة، الكتب المؤلفة في علم القراءة، الكتب المؤلفة في الوقوف والرسم ونحوه، القراءة بالمعنى على التفسير، مظاهر لهجية متنوعة، إضافة إلى تعريف بـ(أعلام القراء) ومنهم: أبان بن تغلب، إبراهيم بن أبي عبلة، إبراهيم النفعي، أيوب السختياني، أبو حرب بن أبي الأسود الدؤلي وآخرون.
