إنّ كلامَ الحكمةِ غذاءُ القلوب، تتهذَّبُ به النفوس، وتطيب به المجالس، وتُستذْكَرُ به معاني الخير، وهو من أحسنِ ما تتناقله ألسنةُ الناس، ومن أطيب ما يزيِّنون به أحاديثَهم وأسمارَهم. وهذا كتابٌ لطيفٌ جُمع فيه مؤلفُه بعضَ الحِكَم واللطائف من جِياد النثر والشعر، والأمثالِ والفوائدِ العلميةِ والحكايات، مما استخرجه وقيّدَه من بطونِ الكتب والدفاتر، مما نطَقَ به فحولُ البلغاء، وأكابرُ الحكماء. وقد جاءت هذه التذكرة في سبعة أبوابٍ، في كلِّ بابٍ من أبوابها جملةٌ من الفصول رُتّبت على حروف الهجاء، وهي في: محاسن الأخلاق والآداب، ومساوئ الشيم والأعمال، وما يتصل بالحياة الدنيا، وما يتصل بالحياة الآخرة، وفي العلم، وفي الشِّعر، وفي النثر. ثم كانت مسكَ ختامِ هذه التذكرة طائفةٌ من الحكم والأقوال المرتبة بحسب قائليها.
