كانت الطبعة الاولى لهذا الكتاب منذ خمسة عشر عاماً، وقد نفذت هذه الطبعة من الأسواق، ولما كنت أدرّس مادة (الثورة العربية) في قسم التاريخ، فقد جعلت هذا الكتاب أحد المراجع كي يعود الطلاب إليه والإستفادة منه.
ومن خلال تدريسي لهذه المادة وجدت أن لا بد من زيادة فصل يتناول الوعي القومي وحركات الإصلاح في الشرق العربي قبل الثورة العربية فالثورة لم تقم إلا بعد معاناة شديدة، وظروف قاسية مرت بها الامة العربية والدولة العثمانية بخاصة، عندما أصبحت مطمعاً للدول الإستعمارية الغربية، الذين عملوا على إقتسام أملاك هذه الدولة التي امتدت إلى أواسط أوروبا والشمال الإفريقي.
وعندما شعر أحرار الأمة أن لا بدّ من الإنعتاق والتحرر والإستقلال، كونوا الجمعيات السرية التي تدعو للحرية الإستقلال ووحدة الأمة، وكانت هناك عوامل ساعدت على ظهور تلك الجمعيات والأحزاب كالتعليم والطباعة وظهور بعض المفكرين الرواد نذكر منهم: عبد الرحمن الكواكبي والشيخ رشيد رضا ونجيب عازوري والشيخ طاهر الجزائري ومحب الدين الخطيب وغيرهم.
ومما ساعد على نهوض الأمة وثورتها حركات الإصلاح التي ظهرت في الوطن العربي، نذكر منها: الحركة الوهابية والحركة السنوسية وحركة المهدي في السودان، بالإضافة إلى تطور الفكر القومي متمثلاً بكل من: تيار الجامعة الإسلامية، وتيار القومية العربية، وتيار الرابطة العثمانية، وتيار الوطنية الإقليمية، ولن ننسى ما كان للأحزاب والجمعيات من دور هام وفاعل في حركة الإصلاح والنهوض بالأمة نذكر منها: الجمعية القحطانية، وجمعية العربية الفتاة، وجمعية العهد، وحزب اللامركزية العثماني: كل هذه العوامل مجتمعة ساعدت على خلق جو مناسب للثورة العربية.
