إنها قصة كأنما هي ملحمة تراجيدية، تروي، تصارع القوى والفكر في سياسات الشرق الأوسط وعواطفه، وتسرد المنافسات بين الأسر الحاكمة، والغرام الطويل بين بريطانيا والعرب، والولاء التقليدي لعرب الصحراء متضارباً مع الإيديولوجية الجديدة للمدن، وصراع العراب مع الصهيونية وإسرائيل، وتنافس الدول الكبرى على البترول العربي.
وعلى الرغم من أن شخصيات الملوك الهاشميين تسيطر على الكتاب، إلا أن صور الشخصيات الأخرى ليست ضعيفة فيه وفي مقدمتها لورنس، وابن سعود، وكلوب.
إن هذا الكتاب يروي القصة العربية في أسلوب كله حيوية، رسمته، ريشة جيمس موريس، الذي كان أبرز المعلقين على الشؤون السياسية في تلك الفترة.
