في هذا الكتاب دراسة قد تكون جديدة بعض الشيء عن الإمام علي بن أبي طالب عليه السلام، تستقطب سيرته بإيجاز، وتستوعب قيادته بتحليل، لم تألف منهج الباحثين من ذي قبل، فهي تعرض وتناقش، وقد تورد وتعلل، رائدها إستقراء الحقيقة التأريخية دون إضافة أو تزيّد.
حيث أن القيادة السليمة، والبطولة النادرة، والتفاني في ذات الله تعالى، والإندماج بروح الإسلام، وإقامة الفروض والسنن، وإحياء معالم الدين في أوليات شخصية الإمام، كما أن البصيرة النافذة، والعزيمة الصادقة، والنية الخالصة، والصراحة المدوّية مؤشرات في سياسة الإمام.
ولأهمية النظام السياسي للإمام علي عليه السلام وفي ضوئها انتظمت صفحات هذا الكتاب متمثلة في ثلاثة فصول رئيسة: الفصل الأول: وهو بعنوان: "علي في عصر النبوة"، الفصل الثاني: وهو بعنوان: "عليٌ بن الشيخين وعثمان"، الفصل الثالث: وهو بعنوان: "عليٌ في قيادته للأمة"، فكان حاكماً وسياسياً وراعياً ومحارباً، ومرسياً لأصول التشريع الإسلامي.
