تقلد الإمام أبو محمد الحسن بن علي العسكري عليه السلام منصب الولاية الإلهية، وتسنم سدة الإمامة الكبرى في فترة عصيبة من تاريخ أئمة أهل البيت عليهم السلام. فهو الإمام الحادي عشر الذي يطل على تباشير ميلاد الإمام المهدي المنتظر. وكان هذا الإرهاص إيذاناً بإثارة هواجس البلاط العباسي فولده هو الذي يملأ الأرض قسطاً وعدلاً بعد أن ملئت ظلماً وجوراً. والعباسيون يعرفون ذلك جيداً بما صح لديهم من روايات. فكان أن ضرب على الإمام حصاراً لمتابعة تحركاته وعرض على السجون والمعتقلات الرهيبة. وفرض تواجده في دار العامة وهي البلاط العباسي، وذلك لرصده ذاتياً من قريب، فحرم أولياؤه من الإلتقاء به إلا قليلاً، فأوصى بنيابة الوكلاء، وأصّل لمرجعية الفقهاء، وأوصى بإنتظار الفرج، وسلك منهجاً جديداً في التمهيد التدريجي لولده الإمام المنتظر بفكر جديد، وإستراتيجية منظمة، وإلتمس خطاً متوازياً في الأداء، فجلب الأعداء إلى حضرة الأولياء، ونصب نفسه علماً للشريعة، وقيماً أميناً على شؤون الإسلام، ومناراً شاخصاً للفقاهة والمعارف والإفتاء، وصك الحكم بعنصر اللمح الغيبي تارة، والتخطيط السري تارة أخرى، فتكامل له فرض مشروعه بما ظهر من علمه، وما برز من ورعه وفضله، وما إنتشر من بره ونبله، من سارت به الركبان رغم قصر حقبة إمامته، وإستشهاده في ريعان الشباب. وكان إستنفار القوى الأمنية في مواجهة الإمام، قد حدد نشاطه الإنساني في شتى المجالات، فإضطر الإمام في قيادته إلى إبتكار أساليب متطورة زمنياً بالنسبة لعصره، تعددت مستوياتها، وتنوعت وجهاتها، مع الإحتفاظ بأصل وحدة الهدف الرسالي تبعاً لآبائه وأجداده في الأئمة المعصومين. وقد أحرز الإمام الحسن العسكري عليه السلام قصب السبق في هذه الغاية، وحقق النصر المستقبلي الكبير في هذا التخطيط، بما أوحى الكاتب، كما يذكر، أن يكون عنواناً لكتابه هذا: " الإمام الحسن العسكري، وحدة الهدف، وتعدد الأساليب " من أجل ذلك يأتي هذا البحث الذي يتناول هذه الإطروحة الفريدة للإمام العسكري، في محاولة للبرهان على صدقها من نماذج حية من خطوات الإمام، وإبراز صافي مشاهد من تطلعاته النافذة، وإثباتها في ظواهر آرائه النيرة. وكان لا بد للمؤلف بادئ ذي بدء من عرض موجز لسيرة الإمام الحسن العسكري، كما وخلاصة عن حياته مع سلاطين عصره، ثم إلقاء الضوء على مشكلات زمانه، وإقتطاف بعض الثمرات من روافد معارفه.
