تتالت على مدينة حمص عبر تاريخها الطويل ثلاثة عهود شهدت فيها ازدهاراً خاصاً بها ونابعاً منها، حيث بدأت بعصر ذهبي مع أسرة شمس غرام ومعبد الشمس الذي تمكن كاهنه اليافع من تولي منصب الإمبراطور في روما. ثم تلاه عصر فضي عندما أصبحت مركزاً لجند الفتح المقدم، ومستقراً للعدد الأكبر من الصحابة، مما مكنها من تأسيس أولى مدارس الحديث الشريف في صدر الإسلام. ثم جاء عصر برونزي مع أسد الدين شيركوه الذي أقام فيها واحدة من أقوى الممالك الأيوبية التي وقفت في وجه الفرنج. ويستكمل التراث الذي هو تاريخ الشعب الحقيقي قصة حمص، فنجد المْصَدّر الحمصي كاملاً بكل تفاصيله، مع المْعَنّا. والاحتفالات الشعبية بالمناسبات الدينية: رمضان، والأعياد، ورحلة الحج. ثم خمسانات حمص الفريدة والمشهورة: النبات، والحلاوة، والمشايخ. وتجد البيئة الطبيعية مكانها في التراث الشعبي في احتفالات الربيع: عيد الخضر وأربعة المرتعشي والسيران. ولا يكتمل التراث بدون الأساطير الشعبية التي كانت تنتشر في حمص. وينتهي الكتاب بجولة أثرية على أهم المواقع في المدينة القديمة.
