تزداد اهمية دراسة الفولكلور يوما بعد يوم ، ويشهد العالم الان نهضة كبيرة في هذه الدراسات تحت تاثير مختلف الاتجاهات السياسية والاجتماعية والعلمية. والفلولكلور- مادة وعلما - موضوع متعدد الجوانب ، اختلف الباحثون حوله اختلافا شديدا وذلك أن مجاله قد اتسع لأشياء كثيرة متنوعة وتناول دراسوه أشياء كثيرة ومتنوعة أيضا، مما جعل بعض دراسى العلوم الإنسانية الخرى يشعرون ان الفولكلوريين يحاولون العدوان على مجال اختصاصهم وهو دراسة الانسان من مختلف جوانبه، ومشاركتهم فيه مما ادى كما سنرى إلى ان يحاول هؤلاء الدارسون حصر الفولكلور في جانب واحد هو الدب الشفاهي في بعض الاحيان وهو الأدب الشعبي ( أى الأدب الخاص بالجماعة الشعبية سواء كان شفاهيا أو مدونا) في احيان أخرى وهو الفنون الشعبية في رأى فريق والتراث الشعبي في رأى فريق آخر. وعلى الرغم من ان الفولكلوريين يفهمون بعضهم البعض ، عندما يتعرضون لوصف ظاهرة فولكلوية او تحليلها الا ان حدود العلم والمادة وابعادهما تبدو غير واضحة للكثيرين نتجية الكم الهائل من المواد التى يعالجها الفولكلور والدوائر الواسعة التى يتحرك داخل حدودها مما ينعكس على صعوبة تعريف الموضوع وتحديد ميدانة وتعدد المشكلات التى تواجه الجامعيين والباحثين سواء في التصنيف او اختيار المنهج وكثرة الاشياء التى على الباحث ان ينتبه إليها في دراسته.
