تنبني فكرة هذا الكتاب على تصور مقترح لبرنامج في العروض يمكن أن يسهم في علاج صعوبات تعلمه، وذلك لاشتماله على مهارات متنوعة لتعلم العروض، وطرق بديلة في تدريسه، ووسائل تعليمية ومناشط مصاحبة له، وأساليب متنوعة لتقويم الطلاب فيه، كما أن هذا التصور الذي وضعه الأستاذ هلال الحجري – مدرس في قسم اللغة العربية في جامعة السلطان قابوس – حظي بإقرار صلاحيته من قبل مختصين في اللغة العربية من جهة، وفي المناهج وطريق التدريس من جهة أخرى.
وهذا التصور على ما يورد المؤلف الحجري يرتكز على برنامج مطور تم تدريسه لطلاب اللغة العربية بجامعة السلطان قابوس؛ ويتكون هذا المشروع من ثلاثة أركان: الركن الأول، وهو إطار نظري عالج فيه قضايا نظرية متصلة بالعروض، ومنها مفهوم العروض، وأهميته، ونشأته، وأسباب صعوبته، ومحاولات تيسيره وتجديده ... أما الركن الثاني فهو استقراء لأوزان الشعر العربي الشائعة من خلال القصائد العربية المغناة في العصر الحديث، وفيه حاول المؤلف كما يقول أن يمثل للبحور الستة عشر ومجزوءاتها بالنصوص الشعرية الفصيحة الممكنة، التي غناها عمالقة الفن العربي من أمثال أم كلثوم، ومحمد عبد الوهاب، وغيرهم والهدف منها "رد هذا الفن إلى أصوله الموسيقية التي ضاعت في خضم القواعد والتجريد". والركن الثالث الذي يقوم عليه هذا المشروع هو التدريبات المهارية المتنوعة ... ومنها مهارة التقطيع الشعري، والإحساس بموسيقى الشعر، ومهارات أخرى متنوعة – يعرضها في الكتاب – عقب كل بحر من البحور الشعرية. وقد ارتأى المؤلف من خلال هذه التدريبات أن يفسح مجالاً أوسع للشعر العُماني، بغية التجديد والتنويع، ولذلك جاءت معظم أبيات الشعر في التدريبات من دواوين الشعر العُماني المختلفة، والتي أثبتها المؤلف في قائمة المراجع لمن أراد الإفادة والعلم.
