يرصد هذا الكتاب ما رآه الرّحّالة الإنجليز في عمان، فيتتبّع تتبّعًا دقيقًا مفصّلًا مرويّاتهم، ابتداءً من الرّحّالة الأوائل الذين كانت عمان نقطة وقوف لهم في طريقهم إلى الهند وما ورائها وانتهاءً برحّالة القرن العشرين الذين افتتنوا بالصّحراء؛ ويقدّم المؤلّف، هلال الحجري، قراءته للخطابات المتعدّدة المكتوبة باللغة الإنجليزيّة حول بلده، فيؤكّد تعدّد صور عمان وتنوّعها، ويذهب إلى أنّه من الخطأ أن يوسم جميع الرّحّالة الغربيّين وسمًا واحدًا، فيتّهموا على بكرة أبيهم بأنّهم كانوا عنصريّين؛ وفي مسعًى منه لتأطير دراسته نظريًّا يخالف مذهب بعض الدّراسات التي نحت منحى إدوارد سعيد في رؤاها النّظريّة.

ثمّة في الكتاب جانب تربويّ جاذب، فكما نربّي النّشء على النّهل من معين تراثنا العمانيّ كذلك يجب أن نربّيهم على أن يعوا ما يقوله الآخرون عنّا، لا لنخلق ’نحن‘ و’هم‘ خلقًا يعمينا عمّا بيننا من روابط إنسانيّة، ولا لتعزيز فكرة أنّ الآخر مسخ يحوك مؤامرات ضدّنا، وإنّما لغرس فكرة أنّ ما يقوله ’الآخر‘ يأتي في سياق معقّد تؤدّي فيه جملة من المتغيّرات الشّخصيّة والمجتمعيّة دورًا لا ينبغي أن يُختَزَل في خانة واحدة؛ إن فهمنا هذه الفكرة حقّ فهمها وقدرناها حقّ قَدْرها وسّعنا مداركنا، ودنونا من معرفة ’إنسانيّة‘ الآخر.
