كانت خمس الدوائر, الوسيلة الوحيدة لإيصال تفعيلات الخليل إلى الدارسين من الراغبين بمعرفة علم العروض. وظلت ثماني التفعيلات التي تتوزع على محيط هذه الدوائر حتى الساعة, آية الإبداع الرياضي, والوحدات الموسيقية التي تضبط إيقاعات, الشعر العربي, مهما اختلفت أوزانه, ومهما تبدلت صورها فيه. لكن هذه الدوائر التي أريد بها تأسيس علم العروض وتعليمه وصيانة الشعر العربي من الانحراف والانزياح إلى دروب الفساد, بعد الاختلاط الواسع والمتنوع بالشعوب والأمم, وما نجم عنه من تفشي اللحن, والاضطراب في السليقة الشعرية, كانت باكورة الوسائل إلى هذا العلم وهذه الصيانة, لكنها كانت في الوقت نفسه وحتى قرون متأخرة من أسباب تعقيد هذا العلم وتصعيبه, واختلاق الفرضيات والعلل, لتفسير أسباب مجيء أوزان البحور التي تفك من هذه الدوائر مخالفة لواقع الشعر العربي ولأوزانه التي نظم عليها العرب.
