اعتاد دارسو العروض على أن يُحدثوا بهذا العلم الذي جاء به الخليل، فقد أجريت محاولات كثيرة للكشف عن أوزان جديدة لخدمة القصيدة الحديثة ولكن أغلب هذه المحاولات لم تأت بأي جديد بل كررت، باستثناء فكرة المخرج بين البحور، أما ما عداها فلم يكن له أهمية، ومن أهم هذه المحاولات هي محاولة الشاعرة نازك الملائكة التي اعتقدت أنها قد أوجدت تفعيلة جديدة، ولكن هذه التفعيلة كانت موجودة أصلاً عند الخليل.
وفي هذا الكتاب يجمع المؤلف "علي حميد خضير" دراسة نقدية لمادة العروض مضيفاً طريقة جديدة لتعليم أوزان الشعر العربي، وذلك عبر تقسيمه مادة الكتاب إلى قسمين. القسم الأول يحتوي على دراسات نقدية لمادة العروض، ودراسة بعض الأخطاء العروضية التي تكررت عند الدارسين، وتناول أيضاً فكرة التجديد والمخرج بين البحور، متعرضاً إلى التفعيلة الجديدة التي طرحتها نازك الملائكة والتي هي موجودة أصلاً عند الخليل... أما القسم الثاني فقد احتوى على طريقة جديدة ويسيرة لتعليم أوزان الشعر العربي (العروض) وفيها فسر مادة العروض برموز ميسرة لم يأت بها قبله أحد من دارسو العروض، مرتباً مادة العروض ترتيباً جديداً على وفق هذه الرموز، كذلك قام بتصحيح بعض الأخطاء التي وردت في الكتب العروضية من حيث التنظيم والارتباك في وضعية بعض البحور.
وفي نهاية الكتاب أشار الباحث إلى عملية تقطيع الشعر الحر، دارساً بعض بحوره من حيث المخرج والتجديد كما هو عند الشاعر صلاح عبد الصبور، مشيراً أيضاً إلى استعمال التطويل عند الشاعر بدر شاكر السياب، والهدف الذي سعى من اجله لوضع هذه الدراسة هو طرح أفضل السبل لتوصيل هذا العلم إلى ذهنية محبي العروض، والى أي قارئ يهوى الاطلاع على أهم المحاولات التي بذلت من اجل إحداث هذا العلم.
