لا يُعَدُ الكلام العربي شعراً إلا إذا كان موزوناً، بمعنى موافقته لنَغَمات معيّنة، وموازين محدّدة، تُدرَس ضمن عِلْم وافٍ يُسَمّى علم العَروض، إضافة إلى إنتهائه بقافية متقنة سليمة، لها ضَوابطها وحدودها وأحكامها.
وعلى هذا، فإنّ مبتغي الشِّعر يحتاج – قبل أن يكتب منه بيتاً - إلى دراسة العَروض والقافية؛ ليعرف كيف يكون الشعر صحيحاً موزوناً، ذا قافية خالية من العيوب، فتكون دراسةُ هذين العِلمين المدخلَ الأساسي والأول إلى كتابة الشعر الحقيقي؛ لأنّ الشعر - كما قيل - نغمةٌ قبل كُلِّ شيء.
يتناول هذا الكتاب خُلاصة عِلم العَروض، الذي بتعلُمه تُعرَف طبيعة الشعر وخفاياه، ويعرضها بشكل مبسّط ومرتّب، مع شواهد أصيلة وأمثلة جميلة، كما يزخر الكتاب بملاحظات دقيقة في بحور الشعر، وجداول واضحة في أوزانه، ومعلومات مهمة في قافيته وفنونه، وتدريبات كثيرة ومتنوعة.
