تواجه الهوية الثقافية الإماراتية الكثير من التحديات نتيجة ما يتعايش في الدولة من ثقافات متعددة، إذ إن وصف الثقافة السائدة في المجتمع بأنها ثقافة عالمية هو أفضل توصيف لواقع المجتمع في دولة الإمارات العربية المتحدة؛ ليس لوجود الزخم الثقافي العالمي على أرضها فحسب، بل لأن المجتمع الإماراتي يتقبل ذلك ويتأقلم معه. ومن هنا يجب أن تكون محددات الهوية الوطنية مستندة إلى الثوابت والمقومات التاريخية المحلية، بالإضافة إلى المعطيات المجتمعية المستحدثة. فالهوية هي نتاج لأيديولوجيا نابعة من تفاعل مجموعة من العوامل الاجتماعية والدينية والسياسية والنفسية. وبذلك فإن قدرة الهوية على الرسوخ رهينة بدرجة التجانس التي تستطيع مقوماتها أن تحققها؛ بالإضافة إلى أن قدرتها على تحفيز الانتماء تخضع لعمق الترابط داخل مكوناتها. وللهوية الإماراتية القدرة على إنجاز هذه الشروط، إذا ما توافرت لها المساحة الكافية في الزمان والمكان. ويستلزم غرس الولاء في نفوس الناشئين من أبناء الإمارات وضع معايير محددة للتنشئة الاجتماعية، ويستوجب روحاً وطنية عالية وفاعلة بعيدة عن المصلحة الفردية الضيقة؛ ويحتاج الإنسان الإماراتي إلى وعي تام بمقتضيات العلاقة بين الذات الفردية والجماعية وبين الآخر المختلف ثقافياً. وهذا الشرط لن يتحقق إلا بإعادة النظر في المناهج والسياسات التربوية، ولا مفر من تبني استراتيجية تعتمد على المساءلة النقدية.
إن ما تتطلبه الحال في مجتمع الإمارات الآن هو العمل على ترسيخ هوية وطنية بمكونات جامعة، بحيث يكون قوام هذه الهوية الوطنية مرتكزاً على المقومات العربية ذاتها، على الرغم من تصدع تلك المقومات والحاجة إلى إعادة تعريفها، مع المحافظة على مسافة احترام وتفهم لاختلاف الثقافات الأجنبية الوافدة وتنوعها.
