لا تعتبر نماذج الهوية الإسلامية المعاصرة هي الأوجه الوحيدة التي يتم تصويرها بشكل متجدد بوساطة دول كدولة الإمارات العربية المتحدة. فالمفاهيم الأوسع التي تتعلق بالقومية والأمة تتعرض للتحدي أيضاً، مثل الفرضية القومية-المندثرة إلى حد كبير-التي تقسم العالم إلى "أمم" تنشأ بصورة طبيعية، وتساوي الدولة القومية الحديثة بالاعتقاد في الحكم الذاتي الديمقراطي، ومفهوم الإقصاء (الهوية في التناقض، بمعنى أن الاختلاف والتناقض مع الآخر يبرزان جوهر الهوية) الذي يعدّ قاعدة أساسية للأمة المعاصرة ومصدراً رئيسياً للهوية. ولم تنشأ دولة الإمارات العربية المتحدة مثل غيرها من الدول الوطنية العربية في الخليج العربي نتيجة لأي من هذه العمليات.
وهذه الدراسة التي بين أيدينا تضع تقيّماً للمدى الذي تتوافق فيه الملاحظات العامة حول الهويات الدينية والوطنية المعاصرة مع الهوية الجماعية لدولة الإمارات العربية المتحدة. وحتى تنجز الدراسة هذه المهمة، فقد أجرت محاولة للتوصل إلى معرفة تجريبية عن درجة تأثير المكونات العديدة للهوية (الدين الواحد، واللغة المشتركة، ومواجهة "الآخر" المصور، والإقليمية والوحدة العربية..الخ). ويتلخص الاستنتاج الذي أسفرت عنه هذه المحاولة في أن الهوية الجماعية المعاصرة لدولة الإمارات العربية المتحدة، لا تنبني إلى حدّ كبير على نموذج النقيض الذي يبدو أنه يميز كثيراً من الحركات الثقافية والقومية المعاصرة.
