القدّيس إغناطيوس دي لويولا Ignace de Loyola الذي كان كريم الأبوّة والأمومة، وُلد في قصر دي لويولا Château de Loyola على مقربة من أثبيتياAzpeitia (شمال إسبانيا)، واختلفت الروايات في تحديد تاريخ إبصاره النور، والأرجح: العام 1491. قبل أن يتمّ الرابعة عشرة من عمره، رَقَدَ والداه بالربّ، وسافر هو في بحور هواياته المضرّجة بالطيش.
في أثناء دفاعه عن مدينة بامبلون Pampelune (القريبة من مسقط رأسه)، أُصيب بقذيفة كَسَرَت إحدى ساقَيْه وجرحت الأخرى جرحًا بليغًا. وهو يفتّش عمّا يسلّيه في أيّام نقاهته الطويلة، اطّلع على كتابَيْن: أحدهما يترجم للربّ يسوع المسيح، والثاني يترجم لطائفة من القدّيسين. فَعَزَفَت خلاصة هذَيْن الكتابَيْن على أوتار فؤاده الطيّب الجوهر، ألحانًا سامية جعلته يخْلع إنسانه العتيق ويفتّش بذكاء ورجاء عن كيفيّة خدمة السماء وإرضائها. أمّا أبرز ما فعله في تلك الحقبة فهو: تأسيس الرهبنة اليسوعيّة التي لا تزال تخدم الكنيسة بكثير من الرزانة والنزاهة، من المحبّة والوفاء، من الإيمان والنشاط... مؤكّدة من خلال ذلك كلّه أنّ مؤسّسها الذي توفّي بروما في العام 1556 بعد أن كَتَبَ بنفسه قوانين تلك الرهبنة وانتُخبَ بالإجماع رئيسًا عليها وبَذَلَ كلَّ جهده في سبيل تطويرها والسموّ بها... كان بالفعل: نجيح الرأي وصادق العهد، نافذ العزم وبعيد مرمى النظر، نقيّ الدخلة ومملوءًا من العطور السماويّة الناصعة الطيّبة. ولأنّه عَرَفَ كيف يُمَجِّد ديّان الأحياء والأموات، مجَّده ديّان الأحياء والأموات أروع تمجيد، إذ أجْرى على يده في حياته وبعد مماته مجموعة من الكرامات المتباينة الألوان. وفي العام 1622، رَفَعَتْه الكنيسة إلى مصاف القدّيسين.
معتمدة على مجموعة مهمّة من المراجع المتنوّعة الاتّجاهات، وَقَفَت المؤلّفة في هذا الكتاب على الأمور المتقدّم ذكرها، كما وقفت على أمور أخرى تُظهر من جهة سموّ شأن هذا القدّيس وسموّ شأن الرهبنة التي أسّسها، وتدغدغ من جهة ثانية أذهان المسيحيّين الملوَّحين بالنقاء والوَرَع.
