وُلد القدّيس لويس دي غونزاغا Louis de Gonzague الذي كان شريفًا من قِبَل أبويه، في إمارة كاستيليون Castiglioneالإيطاليّة العام 1568. علَّمته أمّه، وهو لا يزال في المهد، التصليب والربيّة والسلام الملائكيّ. ولأنّه كان محمود الخلطة وسليم الصدر، عفيف المشاعر وذكيّ الفؤاد... عَشِقَ الصلاة وزيارة معابد العذراء، كما عَشِقَ سرّ الاعتراف وسرّ القربان، وعَبِقَ أيضًا مطالعة الكتب المسيحيّة اللون والتفاوض مع الرهبان بالموضوعات المتعلّقة بديانته. وسرعان ما عَبِقَ قلبُهُ برحيق الترهّب.
في العام 1583، بينما كان في كنيسة اليسوعيّين يسأل العذراء أن ترْشده إلى ما به صلاحه، طَرَقَت مسمعه العبارة التالية: "لويس، عليك بجمعيّة اليسوعيّين". فقَصَدَ معرّفه وأَعْلَمه بذلك، فقال له مُعَرِّفُهُ: "لا ريب أنّ هذه الدعوة من الله". فثَبُتَ لديه أنّه تعالى يدعوه إلى دخول الرهبانيّة اليسوعيّة. وعلى الرغم من أنّ والده اجتهد كثيرًا في صرفه عن مقصده، ظلَّ مصرًّا على دخول تلك الرهبانيّة. وفي نهاية المطاف، وبعد أن تأكَّد لهذا الوالد أنّ مقاومته دعوةَ ابنه هي "مقاومة لله عينه"، قال له: "إذهب إلى حيث تدعوك السماء". فدخل لويس ديرًا للرهبانيّة المذكورة تَحْضُنُه روما Rome. وفي أثناء ارتوائه من خوابيه النظيفة، تَرَكَ فضائله تُلَوِّح الآخرين بأسمى العطور.
وفي العام 1951، حين ضَرَبَ عاصمةَ الكثلكة جوعٌ كبير ووباءٌ معدٍ وقاتل، كان الآباء اليسوعيّون في مقدّمة الذين أطعموا الجياع وآسوا المتألّمين ومرَّضوا المصابين بالوباء المشار إليه. وفيما كان قدّيسنا يتفانى في القيام بالأعمال المومأ إليها، انتقل إليه ذلك الوباء، فرحل ببهجة عن هذه الدنيا، بينما بقِيَ اسمه فيها مُشْرقًا خالدًا، لأنّ الربّ أجْرَى على يده، بعد موته، مجموعة من الكرامات. أعلنت الكنيسة قداسته في العام 1726.
معوّلة على طائفة مهمّة ومتنوّعة من المراجع، تحدَّثت المؤلِّفة في هذا الكتاب عن الأمور المتقدّم إيرادها، كما تحدَّثت عن أمور أخرى تُؤكِّد من جهةٍ عظمة هذا القدّيس، وتُناغي من جهة أخرى قلوب المؤمنين.
