يقدم هذا الكتاب ترجمة لــ "القوانين التأسيسيّة" التي وضعها القديس إغناطيوس دي لويولا للرهبانية المسيحية، والتي ترتكز على قوانين لها مدلول تاريخي وبعد معنوي وروحي أيضاً، وبكلام آخر هي تعبير عن "... رجالاً ماتوا عن أنفسهم لكي يحيوا للبِرّ، رجالاً قال القديس بولس فيهم أنهم "ينزلون منزلة خدَّام الله؛ في العمل والسهر والصوم، بالعفاف والمعرفة، بطول الأناة والرفق والروح والقدس والمحبة الخالصة وكلمة الحق...".
وبناءً على ما تقدم، يتضمن الكتاب سلسلة فقرات تتخلها توضيحات لمن يرغب من المبتدئين دخول الرهبانية اليسوعية والإمتحان الذي أُعد له روحياً وعقلياً، وهذه ميزة من ميزات عمل القديس إغناطيوس فهو لا يسترشد في عمله بسلسلة من المبادئ العامة والنظرية، بل يهمه الوصول إلى مواقف وإختبارات خاصة...
يشرحها الكتاب؛ ومن بينها أن الراغب في الدخول "لا يُطلب منه، لا أن يستند إلى نظام فكري أو إلى قواعد عامة أو إلى مبادئ مطلقة، بل أن يحلل الموقف في كل تشعّبه وأن يشعر بجميع الروابط التي تربطه، عن طريق الذين يحيطون به، بالرهبانية اليسوعية والبشرية كلها... وإذا كانت القوانين التأسيسية تنتهي بوصف وسائل المحافظة على الرهبانية اليسوعية وتنميتها، فلا يهدف ذلك إلى إغلاق الجسم الإجتماعي على نفسه، بل إلى الدلالة على أنه سيجد معناه وقوته في المشاركة في ذلك التقدم الدائم، الذي يشير إلى حضور الله بين البشر، وهو حضور لا يُدرك ولا يُستولى عليه أبداً...".
