من رجالات لبنان المشهورين في تاريخ القرن الفائت الأمير بشير الثاني الكبير، والأب أغناطيوس بليبل من الرهبانية المارونية اللبنانية.
تعارفا وهما في حيال منتصف العقد الثاني من عمرهما، في دير مار انطونيوس سير الواقع في جوار قريتنا رويسة النعمان، وكان الأمير قد حلّ فيه ضيفاً على رئيسه القس سمعان الخازن، مرسلاً من وصيّه الشيخ بطرس الخازن، أخي الرئيس أو أحد أبناء عمومته، ليقضي فيه فصل الصيف.
فعهد إلى الراهب اغناطيوس العناية بالأمير - وهو في مثل سنه - والسهر على راحته، فقام اغناطيوس بمهمته بكل إخلاص، خاصة وقد رأى في الأمير من الآنفة وكبر النفس ونبالة الخلق ما زاده به تعلّقاً - وشعر الأمير بما كان يمحضه هذا الراهب الذكي الجذاب من حنان ومحبّة فبادله حبّاً بحب، وأخذ ينظر إليه نظرة الأخ إلى أخيه الصافي الود، بل إلى ملاكه الحارس الأمين.
تلك الصداقة التي تأسست بين الرجلين في عهد شبابهما لبثت تحتفظ بكل قوتها ومتانتها طوال حياتهما، على ما كان بينهما من فارق في الحالة والمركز الإجتماعي وأسلوب المعيشة.
ولمناسبة ما إذاعه بعضهم في مجلة محترمة من شكوك في دين الأمير أبان حكمه الطويل، وآخرون في غيرها من الصحف من نقد للرهبانيات، وإنكار لما لها من فضل على التنوير والتهذيب والأخلاق والنهضة العلمية والأخوة الوطنية، عدت إلى تلك المقالات التي كنت قد نشرتها حول الأمير والراهب وكل ما لامس ذلك الموضوع الأدبي.
فألَّفت منها هذا الكتاب مفتتحاً المقدمة، واتبعتها بنبذة أولى في ترجمة الأمير، ونبذة ثانية في ترجمة الأب إغناطيوس، والحقت بهما بضع عشرة مقالة تنبئ بدوام ترابطهما بوشائج الصداقة، وإستمرارهما مدى الحياة على التعاون في كل ما فيه الخير للبنان، وإعلاء معنوياته، وتضامن سكانه من مختلف الطوائف والأهواء.
ثم أضفت إلى ذلك أبحاثاً في دين الأمير، تبين حقيقة معتقده وأسباب تكتمه فيه، وختمته أخيراً بلمحة في عزله ونفيه وموته ونقل رفاته إلى لبنان.
