يجمع المفكر السوري جاد الكريم الجباعي بين الفكر التحليلي والفكر التركيبي، وإذا اجتمع الفكران وتناغما أنتجا إبداعاً في حقل المعرفة، ويبدو أن اهتمامه بحرية الفرد واضحاً في كتابه "حداثة بلا جدود" والذي يعد بحق مادة لحوار مفتوح بين من يعنيهم الأمربما فيهم السلطة والمواطن، فليس ثمة غاية أهم وأنبل من عصف الأذهان وإثارة التفكير الحر.
ينطوي الكتاب على جملة من المقالات كتبت في أوقات مختلفة لدواع مختلفة، ونشر معظمها في مجلات ومواقع الكترونية، أعاد الكاتب تهذيبها وجمعها وتقديمها للقارئ، متناولاً قضايا فكرية تنفتح على غير حقل ومجال، بقدر ما هي قراءات في ثقافتنا العربية، وخاصة أنه يقارب موضوع الحداثة من زاوية العلاقة بين الحرية والسلطة، عبر رؤية جديدة، بل حديثة، لما هي، ولما ينبغي أن تكون عليه، العلاقة الجدلية بين الحرية والسلطة. فبرأي الكاتب "لا يمكن حذف أي منهما أو الإستغناء عنه؟ الحرية والسلطة، الحرية والقانون، العشوائية والإنتظام، الفوضى والنظام، الفرد والجماعة، المجتمع والدولة، المجتمع المدني والدولة السياسية وما في حكمها. الحرية تنتج نفسها ضرورة، أو تتحول إلى ضرورة، في المجتمع والدولة، هذه الضرورة يجسدها القانون المعبر عن سلطة الدولة، أو سلطة الإدارة العامة، لا عن سلطة الحاكم..."، وبهذا المعنى الحداثة لم تنتصر للحرية على حساب السلطة، بل استبدلت بجميع السلطات التعسفية سلطة القانون، فإلى أي مدى نجحت الحداثة في تغيير مفاهيم وقوالب رثة وعلى جميع الصعد في ظل المتغيرات العالمية، نجد الجواب عنه في هذا الكتاب.
يضم الكتاب ما يقارب الخمسة عشرة مقالة جاءت تحت العناوين الآتية: "حداثة بلا حدود" "ليبيرالية الحرية طريق وأسلوب حياة"، "الفرد والفردية: في ضبط المفهوم وتعيين حدوده"، "مدخل سياسي إلى العلمانية أو مدخل علماني إلى السياسة"، "نزاع الهويات"، "أوهام الإصلاح الديني لدى العلمانيين" (...) وعناوين آخرى ذات صلة.
