ما زال السؤال قائما: "لماذا حدث ما حدث في العراق وفي سورية ولبنان، وفي مصر والسودان والجزائر وغيرها؟ وتتناسل منه أسئلة أخرى: لماذا لا يزال الاستبداد مقيماً في بلادنا إلى جانب الفقر والجهل والمرض؟ ولماذا لا يزال الخارج يحدد مصائرنا بإرادتنا المستلبة، ويدخل إلينا من شقوق مجتمعاتنا وصدوعها، فنحمل عليه ولا نحمل عليها، بل لا ننفك نزيدها اتساعاً وتصدعاً؟ أو لماذا لا نزال يكفِّر بعضنا بعضاً، ويخوِّن بعضنا بعضاً، ويقتِّل بعضنا بعضاً؟ أو لماذا لا نزال نستهين بالكرامة الإنسانية، بل بالحياة الإنسانية؟ لكن هذا السؤال البسيط لا تطفئ ظمأه إجابات بسيطة أو مدلَّسة، كتلك التي كنا نكررها إثر كل هزيمة أو نكسة أو احتلال أو حرب أهلية، ما دام جل ما حدث ويحدث من صنع رؤوسنا وأيدينا".
يحاول الجباعي في هذا الكتاب التصدي للإجابة عن أسئلة مصيرية راهنة تمس جميع المجتمعات العربية، خاصة من ناحية إخفاقها في إنتاج أنظمة حكم قادرة على مواجهة تحديات الحداثة بركائزها الديموقراطية والعقلانية والعلمانية.
