كل مجتمع ينتج شكل وجوده الإجتماعي، أي ينتج هويته أو وعيه لذاته. هذا الوعي هو بالأحرى تركيب من عناصر تراثية وأخرى واقعية وثالثة مستمدة من المثاقفة مع شعوب أخرى. وهو ما يعيَن وظيفة العناصر التراثية، أو "البرَانية" الوافدة في هذا التركيب، وهي وظيفة مثلَثة الأبعاد غالباً، تنطوي على بعد يستدعيه الصراع الإجتماعي، وتعارض المصالح، وآخر معرفة وثالث نفسي. الإجتماعي والمعرفي يسهمان غالباً في تحوير الواقع وتأويل التاريخ في المجتمعات المتأخرة والمغلوبة على أمرها، ويسندها البعد النفسي بقوة، لأنه ملازم لكليهما.
