بعد أكثر من عمل حول المراجعة النقدية لتجربة الحركة القومية، يقدم مؤلِّف هذا الكتاب الذي ساهم في تأسيس حزب البعث بالسودان ثم إطلاق تيار تجديد ديموقراطي فيه، ما يمكن إعتباره جردة نهائية شاملة.
رأسياً تصل المراجعة إلى أبعد مدى ممكن عمقاً، وافقياً تتجاوز البعث إلى الناصرية وإلى حركات التغيير الستينية عموماً.
مقالات الجزء الأول من الكتاب كُتبت أثناء فترة الحصار على العراق، وهي تشي بالوجهة العامة لرؤية المؤلِّف، إذ أنها تعالج الموضوع من زاوية تركز على مسؤولية البعثيين بعكس التركيز البعثي الرسمي والحزبي وقتها على مسؤولية أمريكا والصهيونية.
وبالإضافة إلى المساهمة في الجهد العام ضد الحصار، استخدمت المعالجات كوسيلة لإثارة قضية الديموقراطية في الحزب ومن ثم في العراق نفسه بدرجات متفاوتة الوضوح، أي بقدر ما سمحت تقديرات الكاتب في أوقات مختلفة حينذاك لما يتحمله الصعيدان البعثيان السوداني والعراقي نقدياً، وتالياً إمكانية التأثير فيهما بالإتجاه المنشود.
الجزء الثاني من الكتاب، متحللاً من هذا القيد وغيره، يُعالج بنقدٍ مفتوح ومتصاعد الجذرية مجموعة من التطورات ويطرح بعض القضايا النظرية التي تتجاوز البعث تدور جميعها على محور تكون الأولوية بموجبه للديمقراطية والتركيز على صلتها العضوية بالتنوير والإستنارة.
