لئن كان تقويم التجربة السياسية في اليمن لا يزال حتى الآن يستند في الغالب إلى مجرد الانطباعات السريعة، وسيبقى كذلك، ما لم يرتكز على أبحاث علمية رصينة وجادة، تتوخى الحياد والموضوعية، لا تحكمها قناعات مسبقة، ولا تهدف إلى خدمة ايديولوجيا معينة أو موقف سياسي محدد، فإن الإشارة العابرة إلى إبراز ملامح التجربة، أو بالأصح التجربتين في الشمال والجنوب، يبدو أمراً ضرورياً للوقوف على خلفية ما عرضه الكاتب في صفحات كتابه هذا الذي حمل في جوهره قراءة لأحداث ومواقف سياسية عرفتها ما كانت تسمى بجمهورية اليمن الديموقراطية الشعبية وكانت ذروتها في الفترة (1984م-1986م). فكان استرجاع متأن، وتأصل موضوعي للإشكالات والخلافات السياسية وتحولها المروع عن طبائعها وفلكها الاعتيادي، لتغدو تناقضات جوهرية من غير مسوّغ نظري ايديولوجي أو سياسي.
ونظراً لما لقراءة الأحداث والمواقف تاريخياً وسياسياً بمنهجية نقدية قسم المؤلف كتابه إلى ستة فصول، تناول من خلالها الثورة المسلحة في جنوب الوطن وما تخللتها من فتن وصراعات، والاستقلال وما تلاه من انقلابات ونشأة الحزب الاشتراكي اليمني، ودوره كقائد للتجربة الوطنية من خلال التعرض لأبرز إنجازاته وإخفاقاته ومواطن قوته وضعفه، مع الوقوف عند مؤتمراته ونتائجها، والدورات الدموية التي خاضها، ولا سيما أحداث 13 يناير 1986م، ونتائج ذلك على التجربة الوطنية الديمقراطية، وعلى مسيرة الحزب ومستقبله.
