يعد عصر الخلافة الأموية أحد أهم العصور في المسيرة التاريخية للامة العربية نظراً لكونه العصر الذي تحددت فيه الأطر العامة للثقافة العربية الإسلامية، خاصة في المجال الفكري العقائدي، إذ تميز هذا العصر ببداية الصراع السياسي في جانبه الفكري العقائدي بين المسلمين، سواء بين أفراد الأمة، أو بين السلطة والأمة، وما شهدته الخلافة الأموية نتجة ذلك من توالي انبعاث الحركات الحزبية السياسية ضدها. وتكتسب حركة يزيد بن الوليد من بينها أهمية خاصة من عدة جوانب؛ فقد كانت حركة فكرية عقائدية في جانبها الأساسي تعتمد في مبادئها وشعاراتها مبادئ وشعارات القدرية، الفرقة التي ظهرت وتشكلت مبادئها وشعاراتها كردة فعل للنظرية الأموية للخلافة القائمة على مبدأ الجبر، لتكون بذلك الحركة الفكرية العقائدية الأولى التي تنجح بالوصول للحكم، مما يدل على حجم انتشار المبادئ الحزبية بين أفراد الأمة، والقوة التي اكتسبتها هذه الأحزاب جراء ذلك، وكانت الحركة في أحد جوانبها الأساسية، المرة الأولى التي يقدم فيها أحد أفراد البيت الأموي على الإطاحة بالخليفة الأموي القائم ويتولى الخلافة، وما يعنيه ذلك لمسيرة الخلافة بشكل عام. أضف الى ذلك أن الحركة انبعثت من بلاد الشام الدعامة الأساسية للخلافة الأموية، ودلالة ذلك على انتشار الأحزاب السياسية المناوئة للخلافة الأموية فيها رغم حرصها على منع ذلك، مما يشير الى تطور العلاقة بين بلاد الشام والخلافة الأموية الأمر الذي كا له آثاره البالغة عليها.
جاءت هذه الدراسة لتوضيح فكرتها في ستة فصول، تناول الأول منها النظرية الأموية للخلافة القائمة على مبدأ الجبر، والنظريات السياسية المنبثقة عنه.
فميا تناول الفصل الثاني الحديث عن المآخذ الرئيسية للأمة على الخلافة الأموية. وخصص الفصل الثالث للحديث عن مقدمات الحركة المتمثلة بحملة التشويه التي شنها الخليفة هشام بن عبد الملك على ولي عهده الولي بن بزيد. وتناول الفصل الرابع العناصر الأساسية المشاركة بالحركة. أما الفصل الخامس فقد تحدث عن مجربات الحركة منذ إعلانها وكيفية السيطرة على دمشق، والتمكين للحركة فيها، وتجهيز جيش لقتال الوليد، وردة فعل الوليد على الحركة، وتجهيز أموره للقتال.
وختمت الدراسة بتقييم للحركة تناول الحديث عن الأسباب الكامنة وراء فشل الحركة في تحقيق أفكارها، أو الاحتفاظ بالسلطة، وتطرق الى آثارها الفكرية على الخلاقة الأموية.
