كانت الجغرافيا السياسية حتى النصف الثاني من القرن التاسع عشر، تشكل حقلاً معرفياً يضم مختلف فروع الجغرافيا الطبيعية والبشرية، من تضاريس، ومناخ ونبات... وسكان وإقتصاد... في علاقاتها مع النظم السياسية ومع الدولة.
هذا النوع من المعارف يعود إنتاجه إلى التاريخ القديم، وقد استمر منذ الإغريق وفلاسفتهم، حتى عصر الأنوار في أوروبا، لكن المعالجات الجغرافية السياسية لم تكن تتبع منهجاً واضحاً أو محدداً، ولم يكن لها طرائق في البحث خاصة بها، كانت خليطاً من المعارف يضم ما يتراءى للمؤلفين من أثر العناصر الجغرافية على السياسة، أو على الدولة ونظمها.
بالقرب منا وفي منطقتنا، تُفصح تجربة كل من أنطون سعاده (1904- 1949) وجمال حمدان (1928- 1993) عن علاقة جدلية محكمة بين الشأن الجغرافي من جهة والشأن السياسي الوطني من جهة اخرى، يذهب أنطون سعاده من الفكرة الوطنية إلى الجغرافيا، ينقب في معارف زمانه لتضمن عقيدته القومية محتوىً علمياً جغرافياً يؤدي إلى تمتين بنيتها السياسية والفكرية، يناضل بها من أجل إعلاء شأن أمته السورية.
في حين يذهب جمال حمدان من الجغرافيا إلى الفكرة الوطنية المتمثلة بالدولة المصرية، مستخدماً المعارف الجغرافية في صياغة الأفكار الهادفة إلى إعلاء شأن وطنه المصري.
في مسارين متواجهين يلتقي الإثنان في المكان الشاهد على التفاعل بين الشأن الجغرافي والشأن الوطني في إطار الإلتزام السياسي لكليهما.
