يتحدث الكتاب عن التاريخ الحقيقي للرستن ويكشف عن آثارها بشكل حضاري وذلك بفضل اللجنة التي شكلت لدراسة تاريخ الرستن ومنطقتها, حيث تم مسح أولي لكل المواقع الأثرية المكتشفة, وللأماكن المتوقع أن تتم فيها اكتشافات أثرية, وقد ثبت أن السكن في تل الرستن يعود الى بدايات القرن الرابع قبل الميلاد, وهذا الكشف عدل المخططات السبقة للتوزع البشري في سورية والتي كانت تشير الى أن الاستقرار البشري لم يتعد حماة جنوباً خلال الألف الرابع قبل الميلاد. كما أجريت دراسة أثرية مقارنة ما بين الرستن كنموذج حضاري من وسط سورية, وبين جنوب سورية. فأدى ذلك الى مدلول بالغ الأهمية عن التواصل الحضاري بين المنطقتين. وكذلك في استعراض للنقوش الكتابية المكتشفة في الرستن التي تعود الى العصور الكلاسيكية. كما تم فيه مناقشة كل جوانب رواية الفتح العربي الإسلامي للرستن, كذلك تمت دراسة الأراضي الزراعية حول الرستن.
