يقول المؤلف في مقدمة رسالته: "أما بعد فإن طائفة من الناس جعلوا الجهل رأس مالهم، وثقل عليهم النظر والبحث عن الدين، ومالوا إلى التخفيف والتقليد، وطعنوا على من فتش عن أصول الدين ونسبوه إلى الضلال، وزعموا أن الكلام في الحركة والسكون والجسم والعرض والألوان والأكوان والجزء والطفرة وصفتا الباري عزّ وجلّ بدعة وضلالة؛ وقالوا: لو كان ذلك هدى ورشاداً لتكلم فيه النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم وخلفاءه وأصحابه: قالوا: ولأن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم لم يمت حتى تكلم في كل ما يحتاج إليه من أمور الدين وبينه بياناً شافياً، ولم يترك بعده لأحد مقالاً فيما للمسلمين إليه حاجة من أمور دينهم وما يقربهم إلى الله عزّ وجلّ ويباعدهم عن سخطه؛ فلما لم يروا عنه ضلالة؛ لأنه لو كان خيراً لما كان النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم ولتكلموا فيه؛ قالوا: ولأنه ليس يخلو ذلك من وجهين: إما أن يكونوا علموه فسكتوا عنه؛ أو لم يعلموه بل جهلوه؛ فإن كانوا علموه ولم يتكلموا فيه وسعنا أيضاً نحن السكوت عنه كما وسهم السكوت عنه، ووسعنا ترك الخوض كما ترك الخوض فيه؛ ولأنه لو كان من الدين عليه وآله وسلم لم يقل: إن حدثت هذه الحادثة بعدي توقفوا فيها ولا تقولوا فيه شيئاً، ولا قال: ضللوا وكفروا من قال بخلقه أو قال بنفي خلقه...
ويتابع الإمام الشيخ الأشعري في رسالته هذه الرد على من اتخذ من علم الكلام مناطاً للتكفير والإتهام بالضلالة وإبتداع البدع، وردّ عليهم بإيراد البينة والدليل، بعدم إنزال علم الكلام منزل الإبتداع، مستنداً في ذلك إلى ما جاء عن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم في تلك الأمور، وتجدر الإشارة إلى أن هذه الرسالة تمثل الجزء الأول في سلسلة النفائس في مجال العلوم العقلية.
