يدور موضوع الكتاب حول مسألة - القول بخلق القرآن - وهي مسألة نشأ عنها نزاع آخر ، كانت مسألة الإيمان محوره ، ومحل جدال بشأنه ، هل هو مخلوق أم غير مخلوق ؟ فتضاربت فيها الأقوال ، وتجادلت حولها الآراء ، وخُصّت بالرد المنصف من طرف إمام أهل السُّنة أبي الحسن علي بن إسماعيل الأشعري ( توفي سنة 324 ه ) ، الذي عُدت مؤلفاته حسماً لمواقف خلافية ، بين فرق ومذاهب كلامية ، كما في هذه الرسالة القيّمة التي هي من الرسائل الإعتقادية المهمة للمؤلف ، والذي أخذ فيها بأقوال الصحابة والتابعين ، ومن بعدهم من الأئمة في أصول الدين ، سيراً على هدي القرآن الكريم .
ولأهمية هذه الرسالة دأب على دراستها الأستاذ عبد المولى أموراق ، الذي تناول الحديث عن أهم الفرق الكلامية باعتبارها حاضرة بقوة في البناء العقدي والصراع الفكري ، وموقفها من بعض صفات الله تعالى وأفعاله ، وصفة الإيمان التي هي موضوع الرسالة ، مع تخريج للآيات القرآنية ، وذكر السور التي وردت فيها ، ثم تخريج الأحاديث النبوية ، بذكر مظانّها ، والمقابلة بين نسخ الرسالة ، وذكر الفروق الواقعة بينها ، والتعريف بالأعلام الوارد ذكرهم في الرسالة ، وذكر مصادر ترجمتهم .
وعليه ، توضح الرسالة الخلاف الذي وقع بين الفرق الكلامية : المعتزلة والجهمية والنجارية والحشوية المجسمة ، وموقف أبي الحسن الأشعري الذي كان وسطاً بين فرق كلامية غالت في فهمها حول فهم القرآن وصفاته تعالى ...
