لو استطاع الناس تنظيم شئون حياتهم وفقا لخطة مرسومة , أو كان الحظ مواتيا لهم على الدوام , لما وقعوا فريسة للخرافة . ولكننا كثيرا ما نراهم وقد وقعوا في مأزق يبلغ من الحرج حدا لا يستطيعون منه خلاصا , لما كانو يتقبلون بلا هوادة بين الخوف والرجاء لحرصهم الشديد على النعم الزائلة التي يجلبها القدر , فأنهم يميلون دائما أشد الميل إلى التصديق الساذج . فإذا ساوهم الشك في شئ حركهم أقل دافع إلى هذا الجانب أو ذاك , ولا سيما عندما يكون الدافع لهم هو الخوف أو الرجاء , أما في لحظات الثقة بالنفس فيركبهم الزهو والغرور وهذا أمر لا يجهله أحد - فيما أظن .
وإن كان معظم الناس لا يطبقونه على أنفسهم . ولا يوجد شخص واحد عاش بين الناس إلا لحظ أن معظمهم , حتى أقلهم خبرة , يفيضون في أيام الرخاء حكمة , حتى أن مجرد توجيه النصح لهم يعد إهانة . أما في وقت الشدة فيتغير كل شئ إذا لا يعرفون ممن يطلبون النصح وهم يلتمسونه من كل من يصادفهم , ويعملون بأشد النصح بطلانا وتناقضا وزيفا .
