جاء الإسلام والناس في جاهلية وشقاق، فعرّفهم بالواحد الأحد وألف بين قلوبهم فأصبحوا بنعمة منه وفضل إخواناً متحابين. لكن الفنية لم تلبث أن ذرّت قرونها بين أبناء الدين الواحد أمثال عبد الله بن سبأ اليهودي ومن تبع دعوته مستفيداً من واقعة التحكيم التي جرت بين الإمام علي ومعاوية رضي الله عنهما على خلفية سياسية دنيوية؛ وليس دينية عقائدية، ومع الاطلاع على الفلسفة القديمة التي انتشرت بين علماء المسلمين بعد الثورة الثقافية التي قادها الخليفة العباسي المأمون، بدأ الانقسام الفكري حول مسائل تستند إلى خلفية دينية في تفسير القرآن، أو بعض العبارات التي تتناول الصفات، وتعدت الصفات لمناقشة ما يمكن أن يلاقيه الإنسان بعد الموت.
وانقسم المسلمون إلى خوارج وشيعة وجهمية ومشبهة وملاحدة ومعتزلة إلى غير ذلك من الفرق الإسلامية، وكانت فرقه تتسلط على الأخريات حسب قربها من أولي الامر، فتنتشر تعاليمها ويكثر أتباعها إلى أن يقدّر الله أمراً كان مفعولاً، وذلك بحسب المعلمين الذين كانوا يتولون تربية الخليفة وتنشئته، والمدى التي يبقى فيها في سدة الحكم.
من هذه الفرق المعتزلة التي كان ينتمي إليها الأشعري، صاحب هذا الكتاب، بسبب نشأته في كنف الجباتي المعتزلي زوج أمه، وعلى أيديهم تدرب على علم الكلام، وبعد مضي فترة غير قصيرة، ومع بلوغه سن الأربعين فتح الله عليه برؤيا رآها وعاد إلى أهل السنة والجماعة وصار من أعظم المدافعين عنهم يحارب أعداءه بالأسلحة التي زودوه بها، أي بعلم الكلام، وصنف في فضح أفكارهم وتسفيهها الكثير من الرسائل والمقالات والكتب، ومما تركه للمسلمين في كتابه "مقالات الإسلاميين واختلاف المصلين" الذي نقلب صفحاته، وهو من أجلّ الكتب في هذا المجال، ويقدم للقارئ بحلّة محققة حيث أغناه المحقق بترجمة موجزة عن حياة الإمام الأشعري، محرراً نصه من الأخطاء، ومعلقاً قدر الإمكان حيث يجب التعليق، ثم مشيراً إلى المصادر والمراجع التي وردت فيها المسائل التي ذكرها المؤلف، مع الإشارة ولو بإيجاز إلى الأعلام والأماكن والتعريف بها وذكر بعض المصادر التي وردت فيها التراجم والأماكن، ووضع عناوين المسائل الخلافية.
