«النصوص الخالدة تظل مؤثرة ولها دلالتها في كل عصر. ومنها هذه (الرسالة) التي رفض فيها سبينوزا الاستثناءات الديكارتية، العقائد ونظم الحكم، من تطبيق المنهج العقلي عليها حتى لا يغضب الكنيسة والدولة. واكتفى بتطبيقه في الفلسفة والعلم. في حين طبقه تلميذه سبينوزا عليها حتى يتحول المنهج العقلي من ثورة في الفكر إلى ثورة في الواقع قبل الثورة الفرنسية بقرن، يثبت فيها أن حرية الفكر ليست خطرا على الإيمان ولا على أمن الدولة، بل إن القضاء على حرية الفكر فيه خطر على التقوى وسلامة الدولة. وهي القضية التي ما زالت مطروحة منذ فجر النهضة العربية حتى (الربيع العربي)، صلة الدين بالدولة، والصراع بين السلفية والعلمانية. وتبين نشأة السلطة في الدولة ليس عن طريق الحق الإلهي والشعب المختار والوراثة والقبيلة، بل عن طريق العقد الاجتماعي بين الحاكم والمحكوم، وتأسيس الدولة المدنية».
