الغزالي عملاق الفكر الإسلامي بلا منازع. وعى علوم الدنيا والدين وهضمها، فتجاوز سابقيه، واعيا من حاول إدراكه. فهو الفقيه الأصولي الذي "لم يكن للطائفة الشافعية في آخر عصره مثله". وهو المتكلم الذي حرس العقيدة ودافع عنها. فأظهر الحق الذي حاول المبتدعة تحريفه. وهو الفيلسوف، وإن أنكر البعض ذلك. وكتابه "تهافت الفلاسفة" خير دليل على عظمته في هذا الميدان. وهو الصوفي الذي أفرغ قلبه لحب ربه، وسلك أوعر السبل ليخطى برؤياه، بعد أن أعرض عن الجاه والمال والأهل والولد والأصحاب. انه بكلمة واحدة "حجة الإسلام". عن هذا الرجل العظيم يتحدث "أحمد شمس الدين" في كتابه هذا الذي هو واحد من سلسلة كتب تصدر تحت عنوان سلسلة "الأعلام في الفلاسفة". وفيه يتطرق كيانه وأثاره وفلسفته كاشفاً انقاب عن هذه الوجوه الثلاثة من سيرته الحافلة بالإبداع.
والكتاب بشكل عام مؤلف من أربعة فصول: احتوى الأول منها على حياة الغزالي وعصره مؤلفاته المتعددة التي برع فيها كالفقه والفلسفة والمنطق والتصوف... أما الفصل الثاني فخصص لدراسة التطور الفكري عند الغزالي متخذاً من كتابه المنقذ من الظلال نموذجاً لذلك، أما الفصل الثالث فتناول دراسة كتاب تهافت الفلاسفة "وذلك من خلال البحث في مسائل الكتاب (قدم العالم، وجود الله وعلمه وصفاته، السببية، المعاد الجسماني). في حين تناول في الفصل الرابع والأخير مسألة تصوف الغزالي، مبيناً أركان تصوفه، أخلاقه الصوفية، مذهبه من السعادة، مفاهيمه حول القضايا الصوفية، وزيادة في الإيضاح جمع المؤلف في خاتمة كتابه ملحقاً ضمنه نصوص مختارة في التصوف وفي المنطق والفلسفة، وفي الكلام.
