"أما بعد فإني التمست كلاماً شافياً عن تهافت الفلاسفة وتناقض آرائهم ومكامن تلبيسهم وأغوائهم، ولا مطمع في إسعافك إلاّ بعد تعريفك مذهبهم، وإعلامك معتقدهم، فإن الوقوف على فساد المذاهب قبل الإحاطة بمداركها، مُحال بل هو رمي في العماية والظلال، فرأيت أن أقدم على بيان تهافتهم كلاماً وجيزاً مشتملاً على حكاية مقاصدهم، من علومهم (المنطقية) و(الطبيعية) و(الإلهية) من غير تميز بين الحق منها والباطل بل لا أقصد ألا تفهم غاية كلامهم من غير تطويل يذكر ما يجري الحشو والزوائد الخارجة عن المقاصد، وأورده على سبيل الإقتصاص والحكاية مقروناً بما أعتقده أدلة لهم ومقصود الكتاب حكاية مقاصد الفلاسفة وهو اسمه حتى إذا فرعنا منه استأنفنا له جداً وتشميراً في كتاب مفرد نسميه تهافت الفلاسفة إن شاء الله تعالى. - من كتاب المقاصد
يأتي بحثنا هذا لتأصيل قسم من هذا الكتاب عند الفارابي وابن سينا، أي إرجاعه إلى منابعه الأصلية والكشف بشكل علمي على مدى صحة ما ورد في مقدمته، وبيان مدى أمانة الغزالي في نقل علوم الفلاسفة، ومدى تصرفه في التدوين، هل نقل زبدة القول بعد هضمه وتمثله أم نقل نصوصاً كما هي؟ وما هي الكتب التي كان تركيز الغزالي منصب عليها؟.
وعموماً يمكن القول أننا سنحاول في هذا البحث أن نضع "إلهيات المقاصد" بلسان الفلاسفة (الفارابي وابن سينا) أي بالرجوع إلى كتبهم، والبحث عن نصوص المقاصد فيها، وهو فضلاً عن التأصيل، عرض للفلسفة الإلهية عند الفارابي وابن سينا، ومع ذلك فإن ما سنختاره من نصوص سواء أكانت من الفارابي أو ابن سينا، لا يعني أن هذه النصوص اختارها الغزالي فعلاً ولخّصها لأننا سنلاحظ أن هنالك كثيراً من النصوص المتقاربة وسنجد صعوبة في إختيار النص القريب وهذا ما تختلف فيه آراء الباحثين، لذلك سنحاول إختيار النص الأقرب بقدر الإمكان.
