قد يرى البعض اليوم أن دراسة أفكار ونظريات فيلسوف كأفلاطون مات منذ أكثر من ثلاثة وعشرين قرنا تعد ضربا من اللغو أو الجهد الباطل؛ ذلك لأن مقومات العصر الحديث وضروراته المادية تحتم علينا أن ننبذ وراءنا أفكاره السياسية الحالمة التي طرحها في الجمهورية، أو تأملاته الماورائية القائمة على افتراض خيالي لعالم آخر من ((المثل)) المفارقة التي لا يمكن أن ترى أو تحس أو يبرهن على وجودها، أو نظرياته الفلكية التي أقل ما يمكن أن يقال فيها إنها أسطورية. كل هذا صحيح ولكن من يستطيع أن ينكر تأثير تلك الأفكار الخيالية الحالمة الأسطورية على مجمل الحضارة الغربية اليوم؟ فقد تسربت الأفلاطونية إلى المسيحية وصبغتها بالمثالية، وقعدت قواعدها. وتعلمها غاليليو فوضع علم الفلك الحديث وسار العلم منذ ذلك التاريخ حتى اليوم على سنة التفسير الرياضي الذي ذهب إليه أفلاطون. ومن يستطيع أن يتجاهل تأثيرها على الحضارة الإسلامية ومؤلفات الكندي والفارابي وغيرهما ماثلة أمامنا؟
