يعد شهاب الدين السهروردي المقتول من متصوفة الفلاسفة، ومن الأدباء المتنوعي الثقافة والأفكار والرؤى، وهذا الكتاب هو محاولة لرصد تجربته عبر منهج تاريخي فكري، يجمع بين الجانب التاريخي والجانب الفلسفي الخاص بحركة التصوف بعد مدرسة الجنيد.
كما يقدم الكتاب عرضاً موجزاً لتجربة السهروردي الأدبية والفكرية، وصورة مشرقة ونقية عن طبيعة فلسفته ومسارها العام، مع الإهتمام بخصوصية الفكر الذي يمثله على معظم الصعد.
لا يشكل شعره إضافة نوعية كبيرة للشعر الصوفي، ولا كما احتوى من أفكار صوفية مهمة اختزنها شعر المتصوفة، ولكنه جزء من منطلقه الفكري وعقيدته الصوفية الإشراقية، وقد تناثرت هنا وهناك بعض المصطلحات الصوفية التي تعبر عن فكره.
ولهذا يلحظ القارئ ثمة صلات واضحة بينه وبين شعر الحلاج وأبي بكر الشبلي لما أبدياه من توظيف للمنهج الصوفي في شعرهما، وشعره على قلته يفتح أفقاً واضحاً في مزج الرؤيا الصوفية بالرؤيا الفكرية التي ينطلق منها أي شعر لأن الشعر إنطلاق من أزمة الذات إلى ازمة العالم وتصوير حسي / شعوري لمجسات الحياة بينما يبدو التصوف نزوعاً روحياً حافلاً بالسمو والتألق.
