لا أحد يستطيع إنكار تأثير فلسفة أفلاطون على مجمل الحضارة الغربية. فقد تسربت الأفلاطونية إلى المسيحية وصبغتها بالمثالية، وتعدّت قواعدها، وتعلمها غاليليو فوضع علم الفلك الحديث. وسار العلم منذ ذلك التاريخ حتى اليوم على سنة التفسير الرياضي الذي ذهب إليه أفلاطون. من زاوية أخرى لا أحد أيضاً يستطيع أن يتجاهل تأثيرها على الحضارة الإسلامية، ومؤلفات الكندي والفارابي وغيرها ماثلة أمامنا. لأجل هذا لا يمكننا إلا أن نهتم بأفلاطون معتبرين إياه منتمياً إلى عالمنا بقدر انتمائه إلى العالم القديم، فإن عظمة الأفراد لا تقاس بمدى صحة ما يطرحونه من أفكار ونظريات، بل تقاس أيضاً-وبالدرجة الأولى-بمدى تأثيرها في مسار الحضارة. ولا شك أن أفلاطون كان من الرجال الذين آثروا في مسار حضارتنا. من هنا تأتي هذه الدراسة التي تتناول سيرة أفلاطون، حياته الأكاديمية، ومؤلفاته، تلك المؤلفات التي جاءت على شكل حوارات والتي بلغ عددها 36 محاورة بما فيها "الرسائل" التي تعد محاور تختتم بها مؤلفاته. أما الحوارات التي اتفق النقاد على أنها له فعددها 28 حواراً.
هذا ما تناوله الفصل الأول من هذا الكتاب؛ أما الفصل الثاني فقد تناول المعرفة عند أفلاطون؛ وفي الفصل الثالث تم الحديث عن نظرية الوجود عند أفلاطون، وحول الأخلاق والسياسية في فلسفة أفلاطون دار الفصل الرابع. وقد اختتم الكتاب بطائفة من النصوص المختارة لأفلاطون.
