لو كانت السعادة نتيجة طبيعية للمواهب وما تؤمن من نفوذ لأصحابها، لوجب أن يكون فولتير من أسعد الناس طراً، إذ ليس من كاتب كبير كان له في أثناء حياته أثر أعمق من أثره، أو استطاع أن يتيقن-مثله-من اتساع عبقريته، وعلى الرغم من هذا، فإن فولتير، حين يتأمل في الحياة، يعّبر عن مرارة مستغربة، فهو يكتب في العام 1770 إلى الماركيز دي فلوريان: "إن نهاية الحياة كئيبة، ومنتصفها لا يساوي شيئاً وبدايتها مضحكة". أن فولتير يدخل في عداد الأشخاص ذوي الحساسية المفرطة الذين يكون منهم الشعراء. وربما قادته حساسيته هذه ليكون أكثر عمقاً في تفكيره، لذا فقد مثلت أفكاره فلسفة حياة وإذا التفكير الفلسفي وانتشر دعم في عصره أكثر منه في عصر آخر، فذلك يعود إلى فولتير هكذا يقول الكاتب غريم متابعاً بأن فولتير إذ نشر الفلسفة في مسرحياته وفي كل كتاباته، خلق تذوق الفلسفة عند الجمهور، وجعل الجماعات تحسّ بقيمتها وتلتذ بآثار الفلسفيين الآخرين. وهذه شهادة تضع فولتير في مصاف الفلاسفة الذين يعتمد بهم. وعلى هذه الصفحات أكثر وأكثر عن حياة هذا الأديب الفيلسوف، وفيها سرد لحياته وآثاره وفلسفته.
