الماء لم يدرس في ثقافتنا العربية دراسة وافية، مع العلم إنَّه العصب الفضائي الذي يشمل في أبعاده معظم الثقافة العراقية، إلا أنه غائب عنها إنتاجاً ونقدًا، باستثناء القليل من الأعمال القصصية والشعرية التي بنت بيوتها على حواف الأنهر وفي القرى والأرياف، مع العلم أن الماء بأشكاله الطبيعية: البحر والنهر والشط والمطر والأهوار والمستنقعات والبحيرات والروافد، والينابيع، والعيون، والثلوج، والسواقي، يملأ الأرض العراقية من شمالها إلى جنوبها ومن شرقها إلى غربها، ما يشكل غيابه عن الإنتاج الثقافي ظاهرة ملفتة للنظر. والتعليل الأولي لهذا الشح الإبداعي في التعامل مع الماء كفضاء، مصدره ارتباط الماء وأشكاله الطبيعية بالريف، وليس بالطبيعة المدنية، والشعر والأدب بوجه خاص ينأى بمادته عن الريف إلا حين تمتد بعض جذور الشخصيات والأفكار إلى الريف. كل إنتاجنا الثقافي والأدبي إنتاج المدينة وعلاقاتها، ويعتبر الإنتاج الإبداعي من ضمن لهجات المدينة وحوارها الاجتماعي، وهو ما يطلق عليه بـ"المحادثة المدينية"، التي تبني تصوراتها على الإشكاليات التي تفرضها حياة المدينة. ولذلك ليس من المستغرب أن يغيب الماء عن تصورات الشعراء والروائيين.
