حكايتنا الشعبية، القديمة منها والحديثة جزء من حكايات العالم، وهي بالضرورة أصبحت حاجة فكرية وثقافية استوعبها العقل الإنساني عبر التاريخ وصيرها إلى أداة لفهم العالم. وسر بقائها وديمومتها ليس إلا جانباً من حاجتنا المستمرة لها، ولذلك فهي كغيرها تخضع لتفسيرات عديدة، وتصلح لها معظم المناهج النقدية، ويستطيع الدارس أن يطبق أي من المناهج شريطة أن لا ينسى نوعية الحاجات الإنسانية التي وظفت الحكاية الشعبية عندنا لها.
في محاولتنا هذه لدراسة البناء الفني للحكاية الشعبية العراقية، لا نحاول تطبيق أياً من المناهج المتداولة، بقدر ما نحاول استخلاص السمات الاجتماعية لحكايتنا في ضوء المنهجية الاجتماعية التي تجعل من الحكاية عاكسة وحاملة لمراحل تطور المجتمعات. فالحكاية مهما كان نوعها تصور المصير الجماعي للناس حتى ولو كان بطلها مفرداً ولغتها محلية ضيقة، وأهدافها فردية. إن الأدب القصصي الميثولوجي منه وغير الميثولوجي، هو ثمرة المخيلة الجماعية الشعبية "فهي ليست ابنة الدين أو الطقوس التي يمارسها السحرة أو الكهان والعرافون، بل هي ثمرة من ثمرات العقل الإنساني العامل، فكانت حاملة للخبرة الإنسانية عبر التاريخ كما يشير إلى ذلك معظم الدارسين.
