ظلت الجغرافيا محط أنظار البشر قديماً وحديثاً، فأبست مفاهيم ونظريات مختلفة، ولغايات وأبعاد وخلفيات متباينة، واستغلت في غالب الأحيان لغير ما يفترض أن تهتم به، لذا انشغل الدارسون والمتخصصون في التحليل والتمحيص والبحث في توصيفها وتفسيرها، وتقسيمها إلى علوم مختلفة، وربما تعتبر الجغرافيا السياسية من بين أكثر الأقسام شهرة وتتبعاً لأصحاب الإختصاص أو لغيرهم.
زاد التداخل في المفاهيم وصار الفصل صعباً بين الجغرافيا السياسية والجيوبوليتيك والإمبرالية، وصعدت الجيوبوليتيك إلى مصاف العلوم الكبرى خلال الحرب العالمية الثانية، حتى كتبت هزيمة ألمانيا نهاية لهذه المكانة، وصار مفهوم الجيوبوليتيك بعد الحرب العالمية الثانية قرين التوظيف السيئ للجغرافيا السياسية، وهو ما أضر بتطوير الجيوبوليتيك والجغرافيا السياسية معاً.
ومن بين فروع الجغرافيا، برز أيضاً فرع الجغرافيا الإقتصادية، الذي يدرس إقتصاديات الأرض ومواردها الطبيعية والحيوية، وكيفية إستغلالها الإستغلال الأمثل، كما ظهر فرع الجغرافيا السكانية، الذي يهتم بدراسة النمو السكاني، كما يدرس الأصول السكانية لجهة السلالات والاديان واللغات.
قسّمنا كتابنا إلى أربعة أبواب، عالجنا في الأول الجغرافيا الإقتصادية، وفي الثاني الجغرافيا السياسية، أما الثالث فتناول الجغرافيا السكانية، فيما خصص الرابع للجيوبوليتكا، علاوة على القسم الأخير الذي ضمَّ خمسة ملاحق، تحتوي على جداول وخرائط توضيحية للعديد من المسائل ذات الصلة بأبحاث الكتاب.
