هذا الكتاب شهادة وليست بحثاً ولا سيرة. السيرة والبحث تلزمهما أدوات ووثائق ومراجع ليست متوفرة لدي. طبيعة الشهادة أنها شخصية، فيها ذكريات وخواطر ووقائع عن علاقة كانت دائماً مصانة بالحب والاحترام والأمانة. حتى في أوقات التوتر، كانت لي ساعات شعرت وأشعرني بشيء من اللامبالاة أو الشك. على كل حال، احترام الآخر. أياً كان ميزة جوهرية من مزاياه الكثيرة، كان يشعرني بعدم رضاه عن تصرف أو موقف أو كتابة...
وهذه الشهادة هي جملة مشاهد، حضرت بعضها وتحققت من البعض الآخر لدى أصحاب العلاقة مباشرة، وسأقصر هذه المشاهد على حياته الأخيرة. مع اختراقات سريعة للمراحل الماضية، عندما يساعد ذلك على فهم حدث أو تفسير موقف.
