"كيف هبطت عليه الذكرى دفعة واحدة؟ لو هبطت عليه وهو في الماء لغرق. لم يعد في نيته أن يغطس. سيكتفي من الماء بالإصغاء إلى خريرها، وبتغطيس يده والجلوس على تلك الصخرة التي له عليها ثأر. رفع يده مجدداً إلى رأسه وابتسم. من زمان لم يأت إلى هنا، منذ أيام الولدنة، عندما كان لا يزال يسبح في الدوار. وليس من عادته أن يركض وراء الذكريات. الحاضر والمستقبل يكفيان. جاء اليوم لأنه خائف من نفسه، خائف من الوضع، خائف من قرار لن يتخذه. كان في نيته أن يخلع كلّ ثيابه ويجمعها ويضعها على الصخرة ويضع عليها حجراً، كما كان يفعل، ثم ينزل في الماء المصقع، ويغوص تحت الماء ويظل تحت الماء، فاتحاً عينيه متأملاً في وضعه ومستقبله ومستقبل ابنته وزوجته ومستقبل هذه الحرب، متسائلاً إذا كان أحسن بالعودة وإذا كان يحسن بالبقاء، وإذا كان يحق له أن يجازف بحياته، بسعادة زوجته وابنته، بكرامة والدته وأخوته، ومتسائلاً إذا كان يقوى على البقاء في الخارج، فيما لو قرر الرحيل، وإذا كان سيجد عملاً، وإذا كان سينجح فيه، لأن عقله سيظل هنا مهما ابتعد... لماذا اختار أن يعمل سائقاً عمومياً؟ في البدء استهجن الفكرة، ثم بدت له طريقة، ثم استقرت في ذهنه، ثم اشترى السيارة بما بقي لديه من مبلغ جمعه في الكويت. لم تصدق والدته أنه سيعمل على الخ. وقال له أخوته بأسى واستغراب: "هذه الصنعة ليست لك". شهاداته تزنر جدران منزل والدته، ولا يزال في الضيعة من يناديه أستاذ. علم ليتعلم. خبير في المحاسبة مع سنتين في الحقوق والعلوم السياسية. واشتغل سبع سنوات في الكويت، وكسب مالاً كثيراً، وعاش مع زوجته في حرارة ذلك البلد، أياماً حلوة، ليعود فيشتغل سائقاً عمومياً؟ ولماذا عاد؟".
من وحي الحرب اللبنانية الطاحنة تأتي أحداث تلك الرواية التي يستعرض الروائي من خلالها فظاعة تلك الحرب، وويلاتها التي عانى منها كل اللبنانيين على السواء. يستعرض الكاتب كل ذلك ضم سرديات تشده ليتابع تلك المأساة التي عاشتها شخصية تلك الرواية المحورية كما عائلته كما أبناء ضيعته... كما جميع اللبنانيين. وذلك ضمن أسلوب بعيد عن التكلف، يقنع القارئ بواقعية أحداث الرواية.
